We Can Do It!

We Can Do It!

Discouraged? Don’t be—you are coming in on the ground floor of a new movement to finally bring about some common sense to gun laws and policies at all levels of government and in the private sector.

While many Americans have been advocating for these changes for decades, the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in December 2012 has given rise to a new level of determination, mobilization, and organization among citizens all over the country. Locally, new grassroots gun violence prevention groups have formed here in Delaware County— and in Chester County, Montgomery County, and Bucks County. We are joining forces to leverage the political influence of Philadelphia and its suburbs to make it clear to our leaders:

We have had enough. We have had enough of paralysis and retrenchment by our legislators in the face of repeated mass shootings—and in the face of the daily carnage on the streets of our communities– as in Chester, right here in Delaware County.

We thank all the public officials who stood with us at our Kickoff Reception in support of stronger gun laws. Too many of their colleagues have been intimidated by a small minority of highly organized and well-funded gun rights extremists who have monopolized this debate for too long. Well, no more.

We are passionately determined to activate the sizeable majority of Americans who favor tighter access to guns for the safety of our families, schools, and communities. Most people are already on our side! We need to empower them to speak out and to vote their conscience on the issue of gun violence. Together, we can shatter the myth of the “all-powerful” NRA. They don’t speak for everyone, or even for most gun owners—they speak for the gun industry, which profits from the dangerous proliferation of firearms within our society.

Despair is the enemy of progress. The recent shootings in Washington, DC and Chicago will not numb us into submission, and every gun murder, suicide, and accident will only strengthen our resolve.
