Strong Turn Out for Background Check Action

Strong Turn Out for Background Check Action

Thank you to the 40 supporters who attended the action at PA State Representative Stephen Barrar’s district office in Chadds Ford on January 30 and to the many well-wishers who expressed their solidarity but could not attend.

The event was co-sponsored by Delaware County United for Sensible Gun Policy and Chester County Coalition to Prevent Gun Violence.  Rep. Barrar became the focus of the demonstration after refusing to meet with  constituents who are members of Delco United to discuss House Bill 1010.  He is the only one of the 11 state representatives in Delaware County who has not signed on as a co-sponsor of HB 1010, which would close the loophole in PA’s background check system that currently allows the private sale of long guns–including military-style assault weapons–without a background check.

Holding banners with clear messages, such as “Rep. Barrar:  Co-Sponsor House Bill 1010,”  “No Assault Weapons for Criminals,” and “Background Checks Save Lives,” so that rush hour passersby on Route 202 could see them, our supporters braved the chilly weather with high spirits and determination.

Special thanks to the CeaseFire PA, Concord Township Democratic Committee, Mayors Against Illegal Guns, and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense for their enthusiastic organizing and support of the action.

While some of the media coverage characterized the event as a heated confrontation between opposing forces.   In fact, any confrontation was intentionally orchestrated by Rep. Barrar, and Delco United supporters remained civil and disciplined throughout.  We appreciate the commitment to the spirit of nonviolence within this movement.
